Salima Naji — the school at Setti Fatma

The masons rebuilding the school at Setti Fatma are the parents of the children who will sit in it. That is Salima Naji's method rather than a detail of it. She is an architect and anthropologist who has spent twenty years restoring the collective granaries of southern Morocco, and who rebuilt the kasbah at Agadir Oufella on a wood-and-stone system rather than the concrete that crushed people there in 1960. Setti Fatma sits an hour up the Ourika valley from Marrakech and was wrecked by the quake of September 8, 2023, three years old in a fortnight. The state's answer across Al Haouz has been volume: official counts put the province past 90 percent of some 24,000 homes rebuilt or repaired, mostly in block and cement. Naji's answer is stone, earth, palm fiber and a crew trained on the job, so the technique stays in the village after she leaves. ARVHA gave her its international prize in January, which is the room arriving late rather than early. Check in September whether the school has pupils in it.
