Ransom — The Price of Clarity

Seventeen tracks, fifty-nine minutes, and no producer's name on the cover. That last part is the news. Randy Nicholls has spent most of a decade making albums the other way round — one rapper, one producer, a whole record — with Nicholas Craven, DJ Premier, Conductor Williams, Harry Fraud, V Don and Big Ghost Ltd, four of them in 2025 alone. The Price of Clarity, out August 19 through Momentum Entertainment, is billed as his first official solo album; the last full-length with nobody's name beside his was 2022. The trade-off is audible. A one-producer record has a single weather system, and this one has five or six hands on it and asks the writing to hold the thing together instead. It mostly does. He is forty-five and writes like it, which in a lane built on teenage stamina is the scarcer skill: the subject here is what honesty costs after you have already told the truth about the obvious things. Nobody is playing this on the radio. Nobody was ever going to. Come back in six months and see whether the solo billing sticks or he goes back to splitting the credit.
