Aperture — 380 Columbus Avenue

Aperture has published photography for seventy-four years and has not had a gallery of its own since it left West 27th Street in 2019. That ends on September 18, when it opens ten thousand square feet across two floors of an 1886 building at 380 Columbus Avenue and 78th Street, designed by LEVENBETTS, with a bookstore, an events space and the production offices in the same rooms. The inaugural hang, curated by Sarah Meister, is called Aperture Loves New York and leans on Arbus, Robert Frank, Dawoud Bey, Carrie Mae Weems and Deana Lawson. All of that is real. None of it is a program yet. The attention this summer is on a capital campaign and a lease, six weeks ahead of anything being on a wall. Come back on September 18 and look at what is hanging.
