Through Motion and Repose: Expanding the Walls 2026
144 West 125th Street, up through January 31, 2027. Seventeen teenagers from Manhattan, the Bronx and Queens spent eight months inside the Studio Museum three days a week, worked through the James Van Der Zee archive alongside Dawoud Bey and Carrie Mae Weems, and now hang in the same rooms as Van Der Zee’s prints. Each leaves with a digital camera and a stipend; the program is free and has run since 2001. Christopher Soriano’s Suits at the Corner is a 16 by 20 chromogenic print of men on a street corner, shot close. Nobody here is building a career yet, which is exactly why the pictures are unhurried.
