The Procession — Rita Mawuena Benissan

Suspended inside a converted 1921 grain silo, nine storeys of sliced concrete, is a tapestry you can see straight through. The Procession went up in the atrium at Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town on October 25 and comes down October 25, a full year on view: 400kg of sheer fabric and embroidered canvas, patterned with seagulls and palm fronds, drawn from the canopy of royal umbrellas that shade Akan chiefs in public procession. Rita Mawuena Benissan, born in Abidjan in 1995 and trained in apparel and textile design, founded Si Hene in 2020 to preserve Ghanaian chieftaincy culture and worked on the reopening of the National Museum of Ghana in 2022. Thirteen artisans are named as contributors. The crediting is the practice, not a footnote to it.
