Taring Padi — Rakyat Pasti Menang

Taring Padi — Rakyat Pasti Menang
93 Mortimer Street, London W1W 7SS, Wednesday to Sunday, eleven until six, running to November 22. Ibraaz has given its Majlis over to nearly thirty years of banners from a collective founded by art students in Yogyakarta in 1998, in the months after Suharto fell. The title translates as the people united will never be defeated, and the display rotates rather than sitting still, which is the correct way to hang objects built to be carried. The workshops are the actual program: cardboard puppetry on July 11, woodcut printing on July 12, both taught by the collective, because the whole method is reproducible by design. Taring Padi left documenta fifteen in 2022 with more than a thousand puppets and a banner removed over antisemitic imagery, for which they apologized. A thirty-year archive is not a clean object, and hanging it as though it were would have been the cowardly version.
