NXTHVN Cohort 07 — Material Conditions of Becoming

Closes Jul 24 at Boesky. Seven studio fellows and two curatorial fellows out of Titus Kaphar and Jason Price's New Haven model: ten months of studio space, a stipend, subsidised housing, and each fellow paired with a local high school apprentice. Adeyemo paints onto material recovered from the street, working from memory jugs and bottle trees. Olufani traces tamarind, okra and rice across the Middle Passage in a three-metre sculpture. Alexandra Bell takes newspapers apart. The show is good; the model is the actual work — support measured in rent and time while everyone else discusses precarity.
