Gaël Faye is a rapper first by chronology, and the novel moves like one: short takes, a returning refrain, memory handled as a sample rather than a flashback. Milan is twelve and French when a Rwandan cousin arrives with a bandaged head, and the book spends four generations working out what the silence in his mother's house was protecting. It won the Prix Renaudot in 2024 and the Choix Goncourt in twenty-eight countries. Sarah Ardizzone's English lands from Hogarth on August 25 at 272 pages; Faye's own 2022 album Mauve Jacaranda is the other half of the same manuscript.
