Djamel White — All Them Dogs

A six-way auction behind it. Tony Ward comes back to West Dublin after five years away, takes work under an enforcer called Flute Walsh, and finds the pull is not toward the job. White is 28, managed a tattoo shop, lives in Lucan where the book is set, and grew the novel out of a short story written in the first lockdown. The Booker longlisted it on July 28 from 163 submissions and he is the youngest name on the list. Note what carries it: not the plot, which is standard gangland, but the vernacular, handled with enough precision that the judges led on the dialogue rather than the violence.
