Coumba Samba: Stars and Stripes

Coumba Samba: Stars and Stripes
Sept 19 to Jan 18, the Whitney's lobby gallery, one room. Samba takes the visual grammar of modernist abstraction, the flat field and the neutral panel, and reads a supply chain out of it: the African uranium extraction that underwrote American nuclear power. The announcement image is a NASA photograph of an unmanned surveillance plane parked in a hangar at Ames, edited by her. Born in Harlem in 2000, she has shown in Basel, Hamburg, Lisbon and London, and this is her first solo museum presentation anywhere. Rujeko Hockley curated it as a guest, with Antonia Pocock.
