Art of Noise — Cooper Hewitt

Art of Noise — Cooper Hewitt
Thirteen days left. Art of Noise closes August 16 at Cooper Hewitt after turning the Smithsonian's design museum at 2 East 91st Street into the best listening session in New York: more than 300 works across the entire third floor, a century of objects that taught people how to hear, from the Castiglioni brothers' RR-126 radio-phonograph to the first Walkman and the first iPod, plus Milton Glaser's Dylan poster and Peter Saville's Unknown Pleasures sleeve. The center of gravity sits downstairs, where Brooklyn engineer Devon Turnbull, who builds under the name OJAS, hand-built HiFi Pursuit Listening Room Dream No. 3: a monolithic audio system programmed daily with live operators, a shrine to sitting still. teenage engineering designed the exhibition environment and a custom playback device loaded with New York songs. Museums keep discovering what record shops always knew, and this one wrote it in hardware. The claim underneath the whole show: design is not how music looks. It is how attention gets built.
