Afroindigenization — Catherine A. John

A theory book that treats a krump circle as evidence. Catherine A. John, professor of Africana Studies at the University of Rhode Island, spent decades building the case that indigenous African knowledge survived the Middle Passage as embodied practice, then found it in mermaid lore in Woodside, Jamaica, in the trance states of Los Angeles krump captured in the film Rize, and in the 2014 tournament run of two Black college debaters. Duke is also releasing an open-access edition, free to read on day one, which suits a book about knowledge held in common. Publishes August 25 by Duke University Press — 244 pages, $31.95.
