The title comes from Vietnam. Kambon served with the Marines from 1966 to 1968 as an infantryman and combat illustrator, and the soul sessions were weekly gatherings Black Marines organized to teach each other. He has been running some version of them ever since. He came home, joined the Sacramento chapter of the Black Panther Party as Lieutenant of Culture, and did layout and illustration for The Black Panther. Then thirty years teaching art at Cal State Long Beach, plus free youth programs out of his own studio. He is eighty. This is his first survey in New York. Over ninety figurative ceramics at SculptureCenter, made from the 1970s to now, fired in raku adapted with eucalyptus leaves and sawdust so the surfaces come out with a metallic sheen no kiln schedule can promise. The show is organized as seven sessions rather than seven decades: Thrones of Resistance, The Middle Passage, Rebellion and Uprising. Works on paper and archival material continue at CARA on West 13th, and the wall text tells you to take the E or F between the two. That instruction is the thesis. The room caught up in 2023 with the Hammer's Mohn Award; the work was finished long before the room arrived. Closes August 16.
