Every Príncipe record leaves the building hand-painted. Márcio Matos stencils each sleeve individually, so no two copies of a batida 12-inch are the same object, a label policy held since 2011 across a catalog that rewired Angolan kuduro, Cape Verdean funaná and semba into the percussion language Lisbon's periphery now exports to the world. The sound was born in Quinta do Mocho, a social housing project outside the postcard city, on cracked copies of FruityLoops; DJ Marfox and DJ Nervoso carried it downtown, and four friends pressed it to vinyl when no Portuguese institution would touch it. Now the institution is theirs. Príncipe opened its own shop and venue space in Lisbon and marked the keys with 'Não Estragou Nada,' a compilation running kuduro, tarraxo and batida under one roof, while label nights still pack Musicbox and Lux Frágil, where Xexa played live this March and Marfox, Nervoso and Dariiofox held the floor after her. Mastering is done by Tó Pinheiro da Silva at his home studio. Skip the tiled miradouros: the rarest culture in Lisbon is the kind the city built itself.
