Deana Lawson

Lawson casts strangers. She finds them on the train, at a restaurant, at a garage sale, then builds the room around them — decor, lighting, pose all constructed, the resulting picture somewhere between a family album and a staged tableau. It is the least extractive method in a genre built on extraction, because the subject is a collaborator with a say in the frame. Born in Rochester in 1979, she was turned down by Parsons for fashion design and went to Penn State for photography instead; her adviser at RISD was Sarah Charlesworth. She took the Hugo Boss Prize in 2020, the first photographer ever to win it, and the Deutsche Börse in 2022. The survey ran ICA Boston to MoMA PS1 to the High, and the Bourse de Commerce showed her in Paris in 2025. She lives between Los Angeles and Brooklyn and teaches photography at Princeton.
